Short answer: Thailand is one of the most searched medical-travel destinations for Australians, spanning dental implants, cosmetic surgery, hair restoration and hospital care in Bangkok, Phuket and beyond. People go for shorter waiting times and lower published procedure fees than many Australian quotes, but Medicare generally does not fund elective treatment overseas, and most standard travel policies exclude elective surgery. Safety depends on the facility and clinician you choose, not on the country brand alone: check Smartraveller, verify accreditation on the official JCI directory, and plan aftercare before you fly. Illustrative sourced AUD examples (23 Oct 2026): single dental implants about AUD $2,130-$4,570 on Yanhee’s published list versus about AUD $3,000-$7,000 typical AU (Finder); porcelain EMAX veneers about AUD $655 per tooth (Yanhee) versus about AUD $1,500-$2,800 AU (dentistrynearme.au). Full tables live on each cost page. This hub orients the trip.
Risks and limitations to understand first
| Risk | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Complications after you leave | Infection, wound problems or a need for revision can appear after you’re home, away from your surgeon. See what to do if surgery overseas goes wrong. |
| Blood clots | Surgery followed by a 7 to 10 hour flight raises clot risk. See how long after surgery you can fly. |
| Variable standards | Smartraveller notes that the standard of medical facilities varies, and services can be limited in rural areas and public facilities (Smartraveller (opens official site)). |
| Upfront payment | Hospitals may ask for a deposit, confirmation of insurance and a valid visa before they admit you (Smartraveller (opens official site)). |
| Limited recourse | Ahpra can’t act on practitioners registered only in Thailand. Disputes go through Thai processes. |
| Insurance gaps | Medicare doesn’t cover you overseas, and basic travel insurance rarely covers medical tourism (Smartraveller (opens official site)). See travel insurance for surgery overseas and insurance and Medicare for treatment in Thailand. |
| Packages and incentives | Bundled hotels, transfers or “free” extras shouldn’t decide a medical choice. Prefer dated procedure and cost pages over holiday packaging. See Thai surgery packages explained. |
Check the advice level before you book. As of 24 October 2026, Smartraveller says do not travel within 10 km of the Thailand-Cambodia land border in seven listed provinces, and to reconsider your need to travel to Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat (Smartraveller (opens official site)). Bangkok and Phuket are outside these areas, but advice can change at short notice. Also read is it safe to get surgery in Thailand.

Why Australians look at Thailand (and what this page will not do)
People travel for shorter waits, published hospital price lists, and English-capable private hospitals, especially in Bangkok and Phuket. Agency funnels dominate many commercial search results. This site’s job is dated facts, checklists and internal links to deeper spokes.
We will not: sell holiday-surgery packages; publish before/after galleries; paste testimonials; crown a “#1 hospital”; or invent AUD savings percentages. Queries like “thailand surgery holiday packages” are answered by explaining risks and directing to procedure and cost pages, not by packaging spa nights with surgery.
medicaltourism.com.au aims to rank helpful, reviewed guides first. Affiliate and clinic-lead models are phased and disclosed separately (how we make money). Ownership of the sister finance site surgeryloans.com.au is named on trust pages; cosmetic and hair pages on this site do not host loan CTAs.
Cities: where care concentrates
Use city hubs for logistics and hospital profiles that hang underneath them, not as “best city” awards.
| City hub | Role for AU planners |
|---|---|
| Treatment in Bangkok | Largest private-hospital density; dental and many surgical pathways. Ambulance: 1724 (Smartraveller (opens official site)). |
| Treatment in Phuket | Strong dental and elective cosmetic cluster; check whether planned activities fit recovery restrictions. |
| Treatment in Pattaya | Dental and hospital options on the eastern seaboard. |
| Treatment in Chiang Mai | Northern hub; dental intent appears in AU search volumes. |
| Treatment in Hua Hin | Smaller hub; hospital profiles planned. |
| Treatment in Koh Samui | Island logistics; hospital profile planned. |
Flights from SYD, MEL, BNE, PER and ADL vary by season. Do not invent fares here; use the total trip cost calculator when estimating nights and transfers. Also see recovering in Thailand after treatment.
How to choose a hospital: JCI verify method
Searches for “best hospital in Thailand” should get a verification method, not a winner. If a facility claims Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation:
- Open JCI’s Find Accredited International Organizations (opens official site) (or the current official JCI search URL).
- Filter Country: Thailand (and city if available).
- Confirm the organisation name matches the hospital you were quoted.
- Record the date checked on your notes and on any page that asserts accreditation.
- Do not rely on a logo on a marketing page alone.
More detail: JCI-accredited hospitals in Thailand. National accreditation: the Healthcare Accreditation Institute (HA Thailand) publishes each hospital’s certificate status and expiry date (opens official site).
Check the doctor or dentist
- Doctors: search the Medical Council of Thailand’s public register at checkmd.tmc.or.th (opens official site) by name, or by name and licence number.
- Dentists: search the Dental Council of Thailand’s Find Dentist (opens official site) register.
- Specialist training: ask which Thai Royal College or board certified the surgeon in their specialty, and ask for the certificate.
Factual hospital profiles (no ratings)
Orientation only: Bumrungrad Hospital, Yanhee Hospital, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej Hospital. Always pair hospital pages with how to choose a surgeon and questions to ask before you book.
Before you book
- Get the surgeon’s full name and Thai licence number in writing, and check them.
- Confirm which hospital you’ll be operated in, and check its accreditation.
- Ask for a written, itemised quote and the complication and revision policy.
- Plan your aftercare in Australia with your GP.

Travel logistics
| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| Flight times | Non-stop Sydney to Bangkok flights take about 9 hours 20 minutes to 9 hours 50 minutes. Perth to Bangkok takes about 7 hours (2LNR route data (opens official site); Google Flights (opens official site)). |
| Visa: short stays | From 15 September 2026, Thailand revoked its 60-day visa exemption and revised its 30-day scheme (Thai Government PRD (opens official site)). Smartraveller confirms Australians can get visa-free entry for tourism and short-term business. Check the permitted stay with a Thai embassy or consulate before you book (Smartraveller (opens official site)). |
| Visa: longer treatment | Visa exemptions are for tourism. For treatment, Thailand offers medical-treatment visas through its official e-Visa site (opens official site), and the Sydney consulate lists a Non-Immigrant O (medical) visa (opens official site). See Thailand medical visa. |
| How long to stay | Your stay depends on the procedure and on when your surgeon clears you to fly. Leave buffer days. See recovering in Thailand after treatment. |
| Companion | Consider bringing a support person, especially after a general anaesthetic. |
| Recovery | Stay close to the hospital. Avoid swimming, strong sun and alcohol until your surgeon clears you. |
| Records | Ask for your operation notes, discharge summary and implant details in English before you leave. |

Frequently asked questions
Why do people go to Thailand for surgery?
Shorter waits, published private-hospital lists and English-capable teams are common motives. Always weigh infection, revision and aftercare gaps, and calculate the full trip including flights, stay and complication care.
Is Thailand a good destination for medical tourism?
It can be for patients who verify clinicians, understand insurance gaps, and can arrange Australian follow-up. It is not automatically “safe” for every clinic or every procedure. Suitability is individual.
Which hospital in Thailand is best for medical tourism?
We do not publish “best of” rankings. Use the JCI verify method, procedure-specific experience questions, and written complication policies. See the JCI hospitals guide and relevant procedure pages.
Which hospital is best for cosmetic surgery?
Same checklist answer. Then open plastic surgery in Thailand.
What about holiday packages?
Prefer dated procedure and cost pages over inducement packaging. Do not treat spa nights as clinical quality signals. See packages explained.
What’s the Smartraveller advice level for Thailand?
As of 24 October 2026, it’s “exercise a high degree of caution” overall. It’s “do not travel” near parts of the Cambodian border, and “reconsider your need to travel” for Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. Check the live page before you book.
Do Australians need a visa for medical treatment in Thailand?
Visa-free entry is for tourism and short-term business. For treatment, check Thailand’s medical-treatment visa options on the official e-Visa site or with the Thai consulate. See Thailand medical visa.
Does Medicare cover treatment in Thailand?
No. Medicare doesn’t cover you overseas, and Thailand has no reciprocal health agreement with Australia. Tourists pay for all medical care. See does Medicare cover treatment overseas.
Will travel insurance cover my surgery in Thailand?
Basic travel insurance rarely covers medical tourism. Look for specialised cover, disclose your procedure, and read the PDS. See travel insurance for surgery overseas.
How do I check a Thai doctor’s licence?
Use the Medical Council of Thailand’s online register at checkmd.tmc.or.th. For dentists, use the Dental Council of Thailand’s Find Dentist register.
Are Thai hospitals accredited?
Many have national accreditation from HA Thailand, and some have JCI accreditation. Check current status on each body’s website, because accreditation expires.
Thailand, Turkey or Korea for cosmetic surgery?
No country is better overall. What matters is the individual surgeon and facility, the flight time and your aftercare plan. See Thailand vs Turkey and Thailand vs Korea.
