Short answer: The clinic quote is one line. This page hosts an itemised trip-cost tool (procedure, recovery nights, flights from Australian cities, hotel, insurance, FX buffer) Where dated sourced data (mt-price-ranges.csv / published tariffs) has no row, procedure lines show Price on request, get quotes from clinics / pending sourced data. Medicare doesn’t cover you overseas (Smartraveller (opens official site)). For a checklist today, use the trip budget planner.
Risks and caveats (read first)
- Estimates only. Totals will be planning figures. Airlines, hotels and insurers set their own prices; clinics change packages.
- Not a quote. Hospital invoices, airline fares and insurance premiums must be confirmed in writing for your dates and clinical plan.
- Extras and complications. If something goes wrong, fixing it can cost more than the original procedure (Smartraveller (opens official site)). Keep a buffer.
- FX and card fees. Exchange margins and international transaction fees change the AUD total (ACCC (opens official site)). See paying overseas clinics and the currency converter.
- Medical suitability and recovery days. How many nights you need before you are cleared to fly is a clinical decision. Default night counts in a calculator are illustrative only and must be reviewed by a medical reviewer / your treating practitioner before you treat them as a plan. See flying after surgery and DVT and flying after surgery.
- Insurance exclusions. Basic travel insurance rarely covers medical tourism. Read the PDS: travel insurance for surgery and medical tourism insurance.
- Cosmetic trip planning stays separate from loan CTAs. This tool itemises trip costs; it does not promote cosmetic surgery loans.
What the tool does
The interactive tool on this page uses these inputs:
| Input | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Procedure estimate (AUD) | Your written quote, or a sourced range when available (else pending) |
| Recovery nights | User-entered; clinical defaults flagged as needing medical review |
| Departure city (Australia) | Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, other - for flight estimate bands |
| Destination | Country / city for hotel and typical flight routing context |
| Hotel nightly rate (AUD) | User estimate or pending sourced band |
| Travel / medical-tourism insurance (AUD) | User premium estimate after reading PDS |
| FX / fee buffer (%) | Extra percentage on foreign-currency lines for card and transfer costs |
| Companion? | Optional second airfare / hotel share |
The tool shows these outputs:
| Output | Notes |
|---|---|
| Itemised subtotals | Procedure, nights, flights, hotel, insurance, FX buffer, optional companion |
| Estimated trip total (AUD) | Sum of lines; labelled estimate only |
| Gap vs procedure-only quote | Highlights travel share of the total |
| Checklist reminders | Fit-to-fly, Medicare limits, aftercare at home |
| Links | Trip budget planner, savings calculator, relevant costs pages |
Itemised categories
| Category | What to include | Status on this page |
|---|---|---|
| Procedure | Itemised hospital/clinic quote (surgeon, facility, implants/devices, scans, meds as listed) | Price on request, get quotes from clinics until sourced or you paste your quote |
| Recovery nights | Nights before fit-to-fly clearance | Needs medical reviewer - do not treat defaults as clinical advice |
| Flights from AU cities | Return fares from major Australian cities; possible change fees or second trip | User estimate / pending fare bands |
| Hotel / recovery stay | Room near hospital; accessible bathroom; companion bed if needed | User estimate |
| Insurance | Premium for a policy that actually covers your planned care | User estimate after PDS review |
| FX buffer | Margin for rate moves, card fees, transfer fees | User %; see FX guide |

Dental example (illustrative structure only - no invented prices): compare your implant quote with dental implant costs (Price on request, get quotes from clinics on published ranges) and add travel lines above.
If you are modelling repayment of a personal loan arranged in Australia, independent guidance is on Moneysmart (opens official site). Repayment examples also live on our sister site surgeryloans.com.au (plain-text mention only on this trip-cost page). Prefer planning here via the trip budget planner and dental implant costs first.
Methodology and data sources
- Procedure mid-points or bands in the live tool must come from dated rows in
mt-price-ranges.csvor cited published hospital tariffs - never invented. - Where no verified figure exists, the UI and this page use Price on request, get quotes from clinics / “pending sourced data”.
- Flight and hotel lines are user inputs or clearly labelled estimate bands, not negotiated fares.
- Recovery-day defaults require medical reviewer sign-off before they are presented as suggested stays; until then the field stays user-entered only with a clinical warning.
- As-of dates will appear on every sourced procedure band.
Cross-check planning with the trip budget planner (checklist) and, for procedure-only AU vs overseas ranges, the savings calculator.
Calculator
Widget live. Sum your own procedure, travel and stay lines in AUD. No default clinic prices — recovery timing still needs clinical confirmation. Outputs are estimates only — we do not invent savings figures, clinic prices or “you will save $X” advice.
The interactive trip cost calculator is available on this page when rendered on the published site. The methodology below still applies. Numbers are estimates only, not quotes, and show Price on request, get quotes from clinics / pending sourced data where our CSV has no sourced row. Recovery-night suggestions still require clinical confirmation.
Frequently asked questions
Is the trip total a bookable quote?
No. It is a planning estimate. Confirm fares, premiums and hospital invoices for your dates.
Why do recovery nights need a medical reviewer?
Fit-to-fly timing depends on the procedure, your health and the surgeon’s advice. Calculator defaults are not clinical clearance. See flying after surgery.
Which Australian cities will flight estimates cover?
Planned departure options include major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, plus an “other” manual fare field.
Should I include an FX buffer?
Yes. Card and transfer costs often add a meaningful margin (ACCC (opens official site)). See paying overseas clinics.
Does Medicare pay any of these lines overseas?
No. Medicare doesn’t cover you overseas. See Medicare overseas treatment.
Where do procedure price bands come from?
Only from dated mt-price-ranges.csv rows or published tariffs. Otherwise Price on request, get quotes from clinics.
Can I use this instead of the trip budget planner?
They work together: the planner is the checklist; this calculator sums the numeric lines. Start with /finance/trip-budget/ today.
Is the interactive tool live?
Yes. The interactive tool is available on this page when rendered on the published site. The risks, methodology and data rules on this page still apply, and figures remain estimates (or Price on request, get quotes from clinics where no sourced row exists).
