Short answer: This utility page hosts a simple converter for turning foreign-currency treatment quotes into approximate Australian dollars, using a stated reference rate (for example an RBA or other published mid-market style reference) plus a user-visible card/FX fee buffer. It is a planning aid for medical travel budgets - not a product ranking against XE or any other converter, and not a payment service. Medicare doesn’t cover you overseas (Smartraveller (opens official site)).
Risks and caveats (read first)
- Estimates only. A converted figure is not the amount your bank will charge and not a clinic’s locked AUD price.
- Not a quote. Clinics may invoice in local currency, change prices, or offer dynamic currency conversion at a poorer rate (ACCC (opens official site)).
- Card and transfer fees. International transaction fees (often around 3% on many Australian cards), transfer fees and exchange margins sit on top of mid-market style references (Moneysmart (opens official site); ACCC (opens official site)).
- Reference rate ≠ retail rate. An RBA statistical rate or similar reference is a benchmark for education. Your card scheme or money-transfer provider applies its own rate.
- Medical suitability is separate. Converting a price does not assess whether treatment overseas is appropriate. Read Smartraveller (opens official site) and speak with a registered practitioner.
- Utility framing only. We do not claim to be “better than”, “more accurate than”, or a replacement for dedicated FX apps or bank tools. Use whichever provider you trust for the actual payment.
What the tool does
The interactive tool on this page uses these inputs:
| Input | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Amount | Foreign-currency figure from your written quote |
| From currency | e.g. THB, MYR, TRY, VND, MXN, USD, KRW (exact list pending) |
| To currency | Default AUD for Australian travellers |
| Fee buffer (%) | Optional add-on to approximate card/FX costs (user-controlled) |
| As-of preference | Show the timestamp of the reference rate used |
The tool shows these outputs:
| Output | Notes |
|---|---|
| Reference converted AUD | Amount × stated reference rate |
| Buffered AUD estimate | Reference result × (1 + fee buffer %) |
| Rate timestamp and source label | e.g. RBA or other cited reference series |
| Caveat strip | Reminder that retail rates and fees differ; link to FX paying guide |
| Next-step links | Trip budget planner, trip cost calculator, savings calculator |
The tool will not rank third-party converters, collect payments, or recommend a bank.
Methodology and data sources
- Display a dated reference rate (RBA statistical publication or another clearly cited public reference). Label the series and timestamp in the UI.
- Apply a user-selected fee buffer so the screen never pretends the mid-market style figure is what you will pay on a card.
- Procedure price bands used elsewhere on the site still come only from dated
mt-price-ranges.csv/ published hospital tariffs. This converter does not invent clinical prices; if you paste a quote, that is your figure. Site-wide package examples show Price on request, get quotes from clinics until sourced. - Dynamic currency conversion (paying in AUD at an overseas terminal) can cost more than paying in local currency (ACCC (opens official site)) - the tool surfaces that warning.

Calculator
Widget live. Reference-rate utility with an optional card/FX fee buffer. Not a payment rail and not a ranking versus other converters. Outputs are estimates only — we do not invent savings figures, clinic prices or “you will save $X” advice.
The interactive currency converter is available on this page when rendered on the published site. The methodology below still applies. Numbers are estimates only, not quotes, and show Price on request, get quotes from clinics / pending sourced data where our CSV has no sourced row. It is a labelled reference-rate utility with an explicit fee-buffer control, not a payment rail and not a ranking page versus other converters.
Frequently asked questions
Is this converter as good as XE or my bank app?
We do not rank or compare ourselves to other converters. This is a simple planning utility with a reference rate and fee-buffer caveat. Use your bank or transfer provider for the rate that will actually apply when you pay.
What is a reference rate?
A published benchmark (for example an RBA statistical rate) used for education. It is not necessarily the retail rate on your card statement.
Why add a fee buffer?
Because international transaction fees, transfer fees and exchange margins usually make the all-in cost higher than a mid-market style reference (ACCC (opens official site)).
Can I lock in an AUD clinic price with this tool?
No. Only the clinic’s written terms and your payment provider fix what you pay.
Does converting a price mean Medicare will refund me?
No. Medicare doesn’t cover you overseas. See Medicare overseas treatment.
Should I pay in AUD when the overseas terminal offers it?
Often not. Dynamic currency conversion can be more expensive than paying in local currency (ACCC (opens official site)). Compare both.
How does this relate to the trip cost calculator?
Convert foreign quote lines here, then drop the AUD figures into the trip cost calculator or trip budget planner.
Is the interactive tool live?
Yes. The interactive tool is available on this page when rendered on the published site. The risks, methodology and data rules on this page still apply, and figures remain estimates (or Price on request, get quotes from clinics where no sourced row exists).
