Short answer: ASPS and partner societies state that gluteal fat grafting carries significant risk compared with other elective aesthetic procedures, with fatalities from fat embolism occurring with disturbing frequency (ASPS (opens official site)). A low package price is irrelevant if the procedure is unsafe for you. Full risks guide: BBL in Thailand. Parent costs: BBL costs.
Life-threatening risks: understand these before any quote
Societies including ASPS and The Aesthetic Society describe gluteal fat grafting as carrying abnormally high levels of complications and mortality relative to other elective aesthetic surgery (ASPS (opens official site); The Aesthetic Society (opens official site)).
Pulmonary fat embolism (PFE): if fat enters a gluteal vein - especially when fat is placed in or below the muscle - it can travel to the lungs and can be fatal (ASPS (opens official site)). Multi-society positions support injecting fat only into the subcutaneous space above the gluteal fascia, and support real-time ultrasound to confirm the cannula stays in a safe plane.
Seek urgent care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, collapse, or severe unexplained pain after surgery - call emergency services immediately (in Thailand: 1669; in Australia: 000).
BAAPS-linked reviews also list death, major blood loss, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, sepsis, skin necrosis and sciatic nerve injury among serious complications (BAAPS review via Aesthetic Surgery Journal (opens official site)).
This page does not encourage booking a BBL.
Other risks and cost implications
- Contour irregularities, fat loss, fat necrosis, oil cysts, infection, haematoma, seroma, scarring and numbness (BAAPS review (opens official site))
- Combined liposuction adds clot and infection risks in fatty tissues (healthdirect (opens official site)); see liposuction costs in Thailand
- ASAPS advises Australian patients not to fly for 6 to 8 weeks after cosmetic surgery; many complications appear weeks later (ASAPS (opens official site))
- Sitting restrictions after buttock surgery can conflict with long-haul flights - get a written sitting and flying plan
- Australia’s cosmetic surgery safeguards often don’t exist overseas (Ahpra (opens official site))
- Fixing a procedure that goes wrong can cost more than the original trip (Smartraveller (opens official site))
What affects the quote
- Volume of liposuction and grafting, and whether ultrasound guidance is used
- Whether other body-contouring procedures are combined (raises anaesthetic time and risk)
- Surgeon and hospital fees, overnight stay and ICU capability if needed
- Compression garments, follow-up and what happens if you need a longer stay
- Possible emergency care, repatriation and Australian revision costs
Add these to any quote

Full trip cost beyond the procedure fee
Even when a hospital or clinic tariff is later verified, Australians should add:
- Flights (return; sometimes a second trip for staged work or bridge delivery)
- Hotel for the fly-safe window your clinician documents in writing
- Companion costs, time off work, garments, medications and follow-up visits
- Buffer for delayed healing, extra nights or a revision trip (Smartraveller (opens official site))
- Travel insurance that may still exclude elective or planned-procedure complications - read the PDS (travel insurance for surgery)
Use the trip budget planner and trip cost calculator for non-procedure travel maths only.

- Same procedure labels and the same inclusions on every quote
- Named clinician and facility on the consent pathway
- Revision or remake policy in writing
- Total trip maths, not procedure-only marketing figures
- Soften “cheapest country” or “best country” searches - compare credentials, aftercare and risk, not inducements

Frequently asked questions
How much does a BBL cost in Thailand?
We only publish verified, dated prices. Price on request, get quotes from clinics. Price alone is not a reason to proceed with a high-risk procedure.
Is a cheap BBL package safe?
A low price does not make gluteal fat grafting safer. Societies warn of abnormally high complication and mortality risk relative to other elective aesthetic surgery.
Why budget for a long stay?
ASAPS advises Australian patients not to fly for 6 to 8 weeks after cosmetic surgery. Sitting restrictions may extend that planning further.
Does Medicare cover a BBL in Thailand?
No.
Does travel insurance cover BBL complications?
Basic travel insurance rarely covers medical tourism. Confirm fat-grafting and elective cosmetic exclusions in writing.
What should be in a written quote?
Itemised clinician and facility fees, anaesthetic, stay length, inclusions and exclusions, revision or remake policy, and what happens if you need a longer stay.
Why does the full trip cost matter more than the procedure fee?
Flights, hotel for the fly-safe window, companion costs, time off work, insurance and a revision buffer often exceed a low procedure-only figure (Smartraveller (opens official site)).
Does this site pick a best or cheapest country?
No. We soften those anchors. Compare named credentials, facility checks, aftercare at home and total trip maths.
