Short answer: Gender-affirming surgery covers a range of chest, genital and other procedures that can permanently change anatomy, fertility potential, sensation and sexual function. healthdirect notes that people usually need to meet readiness criteria in Australia (including support letters for many procedures) before surgery (healthdirect (opens official site)). Overseas pathways may differ. All surgery carries risks including bleeding, infection, anaesthetic complications, blood clots, wound problems and the need for revision. Medicare does not cover you overseas (Smartraveller (opens official site)). Prices: Price on request, get quotes from clinics.
Risks and limitations to understand first
Gender-affirming surgery is major surgery when it involves chest or genital reconstruction. Exact risks depend on the procedure and your health. Discuss them with a registered practitioner. Common themes across major operations include:
- Bleeding, haematoma or seroma, wound infection and delayed healing
- Anaesthetic reactions and blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism)
- Scarring, asymmetry, loss or change of sensation, and chronic pain
- For genital procedures: urinary problems, injury to nearby organs, stenosis or narrowing, tissue loss, and sexual function changes (ask your surgeon for procedure-specific risks)
- Need for further surgery or revision months or years later
- Permanent effects on fertility for some procedures; fertility counselling before irreversible steps is important (healthdirect (opens official site))
Overseas-specific limits:
- Medicare does not cover treatment overseas, and basic travel insurance rarely covers medical tourism (Smartraveller (opens official site))
- If something goes wrong, fixing it can cost more than the original procedure (Smartraveller (opens official site))
- Ahpra cannot act on practitioners registered only in Thailand
- Smartraveller notes that medical tourism in Thailand includes cosmetic and sex-change operations, and that standards at discount or uncertified establishments can be poor (Smartraveller Thailand (opens official site))
- Dilatation schedules, catheter care, wound care and mental-health support may continue for months after you fly home
This site does not show before-and-after images. Ahpra advertising guidance restricts testimonials for regulated health services (Ahpra (opens official site)).

Consent, readiness and legal notes
In Australia, healthdirect describes criteria that commonly apply before gender-affirming surgery, including a history of gender dysphoria, capacity for informed consent, age thresholds for many procedures, management of other health conditions, and letters of support from mental health professionals (typically one for top surgery and two for bottom surgery). Bottom surgery pathways often also involve a period of living in your affirmed gender and hormone therapy where clinically indicated (healthdirect (opens official site)).
Overseas clinics may use different models. Before you pay a deposit, get in writing:
- What psychological assessment, hormone history and informed-consent steps they require
- Whether any Australian letters or assessments will be reviewed
- What is irreversible, and what fertility preservation options exist
- Who will manage complications in Thailand and who you can see in Australia
- Full operative notes, implant or graft details (if any), and medication lists in English
Legal affirmation of gender (documents, identity records) is separate from surgery and follows Australian and state or territory rules. Surgery overseas does not automatically change Australian legal documents. Ask your Australian GP or legal adviser about documentation, not the overseas clinic sales team.
Australian cosmetic surgery safeguards (GP referral, cooling-off periods for major cosmetic procedures) may not map cleanly onto gender-affirming pathways, and often do not apply overseas (Ahpra (opens official site)). Treat consent as a clinical process, not a booking form.
Checks in Thailand

- Named operating surgeon and anaesthetist on the consent form
- Itemised written quote, revision policy, ICU and blood-bank access
- Written aftercare plan for dilatation, catheters, wound care and mental-health follow-up

Recovery and the flight home
Recovery length depends on the procedure. Genital reconstruction often needs weeks of local recovery and months of aftercare. ASAPS advises Australian patients not to fly for 6 to 8 weeks after cosmetic surgery because of clot risk (ASAPS (opens official site)). Ask your surgeon for procedure-specific fit-to-fly clearance in writing.
From 15 September 2026, Australians are generally eligible for a 30-day visa exemption for tourism (the previous 60-day exemption was revoked) (Thai Government PRD (opens official site)). That may not cover a full recovery stay. See Thailand medical visa and Thailand recovery.
