Short answer: Istanbul is where most Turkish clinics serving international patients are based, especially for hair transplants, rhinoplasty and dental work. It’s around 20 hours each way from Sydney with a stop. Check that the clinic is on the Ministry of Health’s list of facilities authorised to treat international patients, and confirm in writing who will actually operate. In an emergency, call 112. Australia has a Consulate-General in Istanbul.

Risks and limitations to understand first

Risk What it means for you
A very long flight home Istanbul to Sydney takes about 20 hours including a stop in Singapore (AeroRoutes (opens official site)), which adds to clot risk after surgery. See DVT risk when flying after surgery.
Who operates ISHRS warns that in some clinics, surgical steps of a hair transplant are done by unlicensed technicians, and that the advertised doctor may play little part (ISHRS (opens official site)).
Results take time The final shape after rhinoplasty can take up to 12 months to appear (healthdirect (opens official site)). If you need a revision, that means another long trip.
Security Smartraveller advises a high degree of caution in Türkiye because of the threat of terrorism (Smartraveller (opens official site)).
Complications after you leave See what to do if surgery overseas goes wrong.
Insurance gaps Basic travel insurance rarely covers medical tourism, and Medicare doesn’t cover you overseas (Smartraveller (opens official site)). See travel insurance for cosmetic surgery abroad.
Limited recourse Ahpra can’t act on practitioners registered only in Türkiye.

Checking an Istanbul clinic

We don’t rank or recommend clinics. Use the official lists:

Ask for the surgeon’s full name, qualifications and registration details. [Reviewer to identify the public lookup tool for Turkish doctor registration, if one exists.] See how to choose a surgeon overseas, questions to ask before you book and how to choose a medical travel agency.

Hair transplants in Istanbul

Joint guidelines from UK surgical societies and the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons say you should:

  • consult the doctor who’ll do the surgery
  • get two weeks to consider the recommendation and consent form before you pay
  • be told at the first consultation if a technician, not a doctor, will make the skin incisions

They also say the doctor who operated should assess your result, and the clinic should have a system for handling complications (BAAPS (opens official site)).

ISHRS red flags include no clearly named surgeon, promises of huge or “unlimited” grafts, and packages that emphasise travel over medical care (ISHRS (opens official site)).

Getting there and recovering

Item What to know
Flights From 26 October 2026, Turkish Airlines flies Istanbul to Sydney via Singapore in about 20 hours, and back in about 21.5 hours. Melbourne flights also stop in Singapore (AeroRoutes (opens official site)).
Visa Australians don’t need a visa for tourism stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. For treatment and stays over 90 days, apply for a medical visa through HealthTürkiye (Smartraveller (opens official site)).
Recovery After rhinoplasty, the splint usually comes off after about a week (healthdirect (opens official site)). Allow for check-ups and fit-to-fly clearance.
Records Get operation notes, graft counts, materials and a medication list in English.
